(Notice how cool, just like Orwells doubleplusgood, never encourages moral reflection or restraint.)Reducing the number of words in a language is but one Newspeak trick eliminating the spaces between them is another. For example, Newspeak itself is written as one word, presumably to discourage thinking about other possibilities, such as Old Speak, and perhaps subversively yearning for it.Facebook as NewspeakThe same obfuscating trick can be observed in what is among the most popular modern recruiting tools Facebook. Compare recruiting on Facebook with hypothetical recruiting on Face Book. Notice how Facebook as a s eamless conceptual unit discourages, while Face Book encourages imagining a competing alternative, e.g., Place Book (of job openings). The development and maintenance of our national defense structure require a steady flow of highly-qualified and motivated young men and women to perform the multitude of jobs required in the Air Force today and tomorrow. Recruiters are responsible for the number and quality of young men and women who enlist and begin their Air Force careers. There are few jobs in the Air Force more challenging, satisfying, and rewarding as Air Force Recruiting. A more vital enlisted profession does not exist in the United States Air Force. Top personnel from a variety of career fields are selected for recruiting duty. The ideal applicant is an Air Force member who is sincerely motivated to be a recruiter and is willing to accept any geographical area. However, we know many applicants are motivated primarily by a desire to serve in a specific geographical area or by dissatisfaction with the area where they presently serve. Geographical preferences are the first criteria used in making initial assignment matches. If there are no suitable volunteers, then most eligible non-volunteer will be chosen according to AFPC selection criteria. Tour of Duty for Recruiters Recruiting duty is a 3-year, controlled tour. Under the Recruiter Extension Program, recruiters have the option to extend for 1 year at a time. Although stability is one of the most attractive features of recruiting duty, there are associated constraints. Once placed in a stabilized status, individuals normally remain in that status until completion of the entire tour.While in stabilized status, recruiters are ineligible to volunteer for overseas assignment, retraining, technical school, etc., except when the application coincides with scheduled rotation.Generally speaking, recruiters are not assigned out of Recruiting Service before completion of the tour except for humanitarian reassignment, discharge, or retirement. A recruiter may be moved from one location to another within Recruiting Service. Such internal moves are necessary due to program changes, reorganization, and assignments to career broadening or career progression positions. Normal Air Force permanent change of station (PCS) or permanent change of assignment (PCA) guidelines apply. Financial Aspects of Recruiting Duty Living in civilian communities where commissary, exchange, medical, and other government facilities are not readily available is more expensive than being on or near an Air Force base. Recruiters receive special duty assignment pay (SDAP - $375.00 per month). However, this pay is not designed to offset the expenses associated with living off base. SDAP is authorized and intended to attract and retain NCOs to the responsibilities of recruiting duties. Also, authorized out-of-pocket expenses associated with the recruiting job are reimbursable up to certain limits. Off-duty employment for recruiters assigned to any recruiting office is strictly prohibited. Prospective recruiters must be able to subsist on their military pay. If you are having financial problems now, recruiting duty is not the place to try and recover. Recruiter Expectations Because recruiting is a sales profession, the recruiter must tailor daily activities to the availability of prospective applicants and community influencers. It often requires irregular hours and some periods of TDY away from home. For instance, an applicant may want you to come to their home to make a presentation. The applicants parents may also want to hear the information, and if 8:30 p.m. is the best time, then you are expected to accommodate. Additionally, many applicants will only be available on weekends, and you will have to be available then, too. Covering large geographical areas is another time absorber. In some cases, the territory covered is so large that TDY to what we call an itinerary office is necessary. To put it simply, as an Air Force recruiter, you must be willing to live the Air Force core values of Service before Self at all times. But this is only the tip of the sword. You will also be expected to interact with civic and community organizations, establish rapport with school officials, and direct an effective school visitation plan. Some other exciting activities include participating in parades and other special events, creating community awareness, and soliciting assistance from the local media in promotion of the Air Force. Goals (Quotas) Successfully meeting monthly recruiting goals is vital to the Air Force mission. Millions of dollars are committed to the basic military and technical training programs in the Air Force. Obtaining sufficient quality recruits and other applicants to fill Air Force personnel requirements can be a challenge. Competition from other armed services and the private sector is keen, and recruiters must work hard to attain their assigned recruiting goals. Therefore, it is important that applicants for recruiting duty understand the goal system to prevent inaccurate assumptions. Air Force personnel requirements are given to Recruiting Service in the form of program goals for enlisted accession (EA), line officers (Officer Training School), health care professionals (physicians, nurses, etc.), applicants for Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) scholarships and others as required. Recruiters are assigned goals on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis in one or more of these programs. Applicant quality is very important, and the mental, physical and moral qualifications are high, especially in the enlisted accession program where all new recruiters start. Production goals are based on a detailed market analysis of the recruiters assigned area and are as fair and equitable as possible. Monthly productivity is carefully analyzed and evaluated. Every recruiter has sufficient market to achieve his or her assigned goals. Recruiters who meet or exceed goals are properly recognized, and those who fail to achieve goal requirements are evaluated to determine the reason and then provided additional training as necessary. Contrary to popular belief, recruiterâs Enlisted Performance Reports (EPRs) is not based solely on attainment of assigned goals. Additional training and assistance are much preferred over reassignment and getting a replacement. However, if productivity evaluations show the recruiter is not doing the job due to lack of effort, then appropriate relief actions may be taken. The goal assignment system used by recruiting managers is more closely monitored than work allocation systems used in most other Air Force specialties. Even with this goal emphasis, no other Air Force job similarly allows individuals to establish their relative success in competition with other NCOs. It is truly a challenging and refreshing experience. The recruiter plans the work, and then works the plandirect supervision is usually very limited. Eligibility An applicant must: Be SRA thru MSgt and have 17 or fewer years time in service (TIS). All applicants must be career committed, regardless of Air Force specialty code (AFSC) or assignment status.Be qualified in his or her AFSC. Must not have any 3 (or less) enlisted performance reports (EPRs) within the last three reporting periods.Have appropriate time on station (TOS) before applying. However, waivers are authorized for CONUS assignments. Overseas members must be within one year of established DEROS to apply.Have a minimum physical profile of 2-2-2-2-2-1 and minimum dental classification of II. Any waiver must be requested and fully documented. Be outstanding in appearance, military bearing, conduct and past performance. Waivers for conditions that detract from outstanding personal appearance, shaving waivers, etc., will not be granted. A Body Fat Measurement (BFM) waiver will be considered on an individual basis. Air Force recruiters must meet or exceed AFI 36-2903 standards.Have a valid state drivers license. Method of Selection Recruiters are chosen from two sources, volunteers and selectees. Volunteers are the preferred method of selection. However, if a requirement remains unfilled, the Recruiter Selection Process mandates that AFPC select the most eligible member to fill these requirements. If you meet the eligibility criteria referenced in the above section and have been on station more than 8 years you are vulnerable for âselectionâ by AFPC. The Recruiter Screening Team screens all applications for recruiting duty. This screening process is purposely rigorous and extensive, designed to ensure the best possible person/job match and the likelihood of success as an Air Force Recruiter. This process includes review of candidateâs application, EPR history, credit check, AMJAM check, medical records review of member/family, Unit Commanderâs Recommendation, and an extensive interview/assessment process. Potential applicants will be administered the Emotional Quotient Inventory and the Emotional Quotient Interview, which will be scored against the profile of successful recruiters to determine potential skill match for recruiting duty. Every effort will be made to place selected applicants in their areas of preference. However, this cannot be guaranteed. Additionally, if youâre a volunteer, you will not be assigned to a location without your consent. Under no circumstances should any PCS planning be made until official assignment notification by AFPC. Recruiting School Applicants selected for a recruiting assignment receive assignment instructions through their MPF, to include orders for the TDY to the 7-week Recruiting School at Lackland AFB, Texas. There is no shortage of uncertainty, as both parties do all they can to present themselves in the best light not unlike dating, but with a salary and a job title on the line. And, just as in dating, it can be difficult to see the true colors of the situation, particularly if you desperately want to like the new opportunity. Getting seduced is the easy and fun part. However, accepting a job at a company that is not a good fit for you, or is a downright terrible place to work, is a sure recipe for misery. So, what's a job candidate to do? My advice is to pay attention to all things, big and small, in every single interaction with your prospective employer. Think of your interviews, emails, phone calls and office visits as a glimpse behind the veil and use it to your advantage. After visiting an office, your gut will be able to tell you if there are signs of it being a bad company. The reality is that no one enjoys turning down an opportunity, but it is preferable to taking a job at a company that you won't be happy with. Here are some early red flags to pay attention to. You are not given an opportunity to interview with your future manager Believe it or not, this has actually happened to me! I was interviewing for an accounting team leader position at a large company, and was surprised that the interview schedule did not include the accounting manager the very person I would be reporting to. My request to get an introduction and a quick conversation with him was turned down, ostensibly because he was not the decision maker. That set off my radar as a sign of a bad company. Did I really want to work at a company where my boss would not get a say in selecting the person who reported to him? Did I want to accept a position in a department where my direct manager was not trusted to make a hiring decision? Will I be trusted to make any decisions at all? That may be a sign of a bad company culture. Needless to say, I turned down that opportunity after the first round of interviews. If you are ever in a similar situation, I strongly recommend you think through what's actually going on. A personality and working style fit with your manager is a key factor for job satisfaction. Personal autonomy is also critical for being happy at work. If you are not given the chance to interview with your future manager, beware of the overall potential for a bad company culture. The job responsibilities are unclear If the job description is vague, and no one can explain what success in your role will look like, run in the other direction. Accepting a position without clear responsibilities and expectations is like stepping off a ledge and hoping there are cushions and ice-cream at the bottom of the canyon. Even for those of us who are comfortable going with the flow, a position that is this open-ended can spell frustration, endless fire drills, and poor performance reviews. It can also signal a difficult place to grow personally and professionally how can you expect meaningful and actionable feedback if no one knows what you're supposed to be doing? The company is disrespectful or unprofessional In my experience, most companies do their best to come across as professional and pleasant, at least in the interviews (think first date). It is that much more of a shock when you come across one that endorses disrespectful behavior. From interviews cancelled at the last moment without apology, to hiring managers texting during the interview, you don't have to tolerate unprofessional antics. The same goes for racist or sexist jokes and slurs. Those are very clear signs of a bad company you don't want to work for. Even something as seemingly innocuous as allowing long stretches of time to pass between communications and updates can be an early sign of an unprofessional outfit. My advice is to treat the interview process as a preview of what it will be like to work at this company. Unprofessional behavior is a sign of a bad company, and do you really want to work there? Sure, it's easy to make excuses, especially if you really want to like the position (They have dozens of candidates to interview! and They must be busy this week). Having other candidates to consider and being busy are not valid reasons to leave you hanging. All it takes is some consideration and one minute to send a quick We did not forget about you, here is the status of the interview process email. It is OK to hold a company to a professional standard. The company has a bad reputation The Internet makes a reputation check easier than ever. Check sites like Glassdoor for reviews and you'll get a great idea of signs of a bad company or not. Be sure to read all of them and pay attention to details mentioned. What trends do you pick up on? If you know someone who worked at this company (or is currently there), consider reaching out with a few open-ended questions. Ask what it was like to work there, what was most appreciated or most frustrating, and listen well to learn as much as you can. There is a pattern of people leaving the department If you observe a pattern of people jumping ship, take it as a red flag and a reason to ask more questions. I like to ask everyone I come in contact with how long they have been with the company. If you notice that virtually everyone is new, it could be a sign of a bad company. In that case, the situation warrants a closer look, unless you are interviewing at a startup. People are talking behind each other's back If the hiring manager is gossiping or complaining about interactions with employees or other departments in an unprofessional manner, it's a bad sign. This reminded me of self-criticism - labeling is something we do to ourselves too.What happens when we are the ones bullying ourselves?Self-bullying is more harmful than being bullied by others - itâs impossible to stand up to external criticism if you canât stop your own attacks.Labels are anything but randomâWe contain multitudes.â - Walt WhitmanOur brain is wired to take shortcuts - thatâs why we love labels.Early survival depended on the ability t o see patterns in randomness. Our ancestors needed to discriminate friends from foes - they had to quickly decide to either fight or fly.However, rapid reasoning is prone to error - we must second guess what our brain is trying to tell us.Labeling is more than name calling - itâs an extreme form of all-or-nothing thinking. Instead of saying âMy last project failed,â you attach a negative label to yourself: âIâm a failure.â You might also call yourself âa jerk,â âa stupid,â or âan incompetent.âThe use of labels is an irrational form of thinking, according to David Burnes, who made Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) popular.Labels make people invisible - we reduce them to a single adjective.Labeling is a cognitive distortion - itâs a biased perspective of ourselves and the world around us. These irrational thoughts are often subtle - itâs difficult to recognize them before they turn into a pattern. Instead of trying to understand people, we take a simplified approach to team building. People are put in a (personality) box that limits their ability to grow.Human beings feel unco mfortable with what we donât know - we are driven to pull together stories to make sense of others. Labels identify in-groups and out-groups - they divide us based on one single trait.Our brain is lazy - categorizing and filing people through perception saves us the effort. Instead of spending time to know another person, we jump into quick conclusions. The labels we use merely capture our impression of someone else in a particular place and moment.Labels donât let us see people - they describe an oversimplified version of who they are.When you label yourself, you are following the same pattern. Instead of accepting one flaw, you become that flaw. You canât see beyond it - you let one defect define you.Not all labels hurt the sameâLabels are for filing. Labels are for clothing. I see this pattern very often when working with teams - some people repeat themselves and others canât try new roles.Labeling hinders your potential in various ways. Labels are static - they get you stuck in one moment or experience. Labels divide us by grouping us into categories - you are either a friend or a foe. Labels highlight one single aspect - descriptive labels hide your distinct and true identity. Labels force you to play to your strengths - prescriptive labels stereotype the roles you play at work or in your family. Labels turn one part into the whole - we let one flaw define who we are. Organizations like to talk about professional and leadership development but miss one point - itâs human development what matters. By becoming better persons, we improve our ability to lead and thrive as professionals too.Letâs remove the labels that divide what we do.We are fluid and adaptive - our preferences and behaviors evolve through time. But labels hinder your personal growth. When you put yourself into a box, you get stuck.You are not a label - you contain multitudes.How to stand up to self-bullyingâLabeling yourself is not only self-defeating, it is irrational.â - David BurnsUse the following steps to become more aware of self-labeling. Categorize the labels Grab a piece of paper and divide it into six equal rectangles. Donât become an adjective As you become more aware of how you label yourself, avoid turning events into an adjective - donât let something define you.For example, if you lose a match, instead of calling yourself a loser, reframe how you talk to yourself. Use this structure: âIâm not a loser, I just lost a match.â5. Defy the name Going back to the anti-bullying campaign: donât let labels define you.
